The focus of my IBS programme is to help you overcome your IBS symptoms, so you can regain control of their life and feel better.
Prior to your initial consultation
It is important to see your GP prior to your initial consultation as IBS-like symptoms can also occur in other serious gut conditions such as coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. These conditions need to be excluded before a diagnosis of IBS is made.
The initial appointment
Before you attend, write down any questions you have. Your assessment will include:
- Symptom history
- The tests that preceded your IBS diagnosis
- The medication you have tried or are still taking
- Any dietary manipulation you have tried
- Your current food and drink intake
- Your current activity levels
- Family history of bowel or allergic disorders
First line advice for IBS
Before trying the low FODMAP diet, it is important to address other dietary factors including regular meals, fluid intake, caffeine intake, and excess fat, which can worsen symptoms. 50% of people with IBS get symptom relief following the first line advice. I will also recommend specific probiotics that have scientific evidence to support them.
Second line advice for IBS- the low FODMAP diet
If your symptoms have not improved following the first line advice, then I will recommend you try the low FODMAP diet. The low FODMAP diet can help you identify your trigger foods so that you get relief from your IBS symptoms.
“I had been suffering with a very sore and bloated tummy for almost a year when I decided to finally get in touch with Mairi. I had tried many things including herbal remedies, medication and changing my diet – none of which gave me relief from my discomfort. I spoke to Mairi on the phone at my lowest point, she listened and was kind, which made me feel comfortable to talk to her about my symptoms. We talked through all of my symptoms, which at the time were severe, and Mairi explained how the FODMAP diet could help me. I had read about the diet online, but was nervous to try it and not sure it would be worth it, Mairi’s reassurance and guidance throughout helped me to see the plan through. I couldn’t be happier with the results. It is not an exaggeration to say it has changed my life; I am no longer uncomfortable every day and I can enjoy what I am eating again without the anxiety I had. I have learned what my triggers are so I can manage my diet in a healthy way. I would encourage anyone with IBS symptoms to get in touch with Mairi, I wish I had done sooner, it is not worth the hesitation”. Ciara Harris
